A Trip to the Forest

On the day before Thanksgiving weekend, grade 4 students enjoyed a guided walk with forest experts Ross Maxwell, James Norman, and Megan Babineau from Alberta Newsprint Company (ANC). During the walk, the experts fielded several questions from students before students participate in several experiential activities including examining the forest floor for decomposition, drilling the core of a tree and counting the tree rings to determine the tree's age.

Students were happy to share their new knowledge afterwards.

"I now know the centre of the tree is called the pith!"

"I can't believe ANC will plant 5 million trees next year!"

"I loved how you can see the stages of decomposition on the forest floor."

Thank You Ross, James, and Megan for sharing your expertise.

Hi Soren. . . that stick is actually a wood core drilled out of the tree. Students counted the rings on the wood core to calculate the tree's age.
