Hockey Day at Central
Posted on January 18th, 2016
To support Whitecourt's entry into the Kraft Hockeyville contest, we hosted a friendly exhibition game between our Grade 5 team and several players from the Whitecourt Wolverines Junior A team!
Our Grade 5 team was formed with 15 players. Ally, the lone female on the team, was chosen as captain. Mr. Vasquez and Mrs. Czenczek volunteered to coach the Gr 5 team.
The Wolverines sent 8 players to challenge for the Eagle Cup. Unfortunately, they did not have a goalie so before the game, the Wolverines sent future considerations in a trade for Gr 5 keeper Owen.
With the sun beating down and 'Go Eagles Go' signs all around, Renee led us in O Canada while Mckenna skated the flag around the rink. The referee, Ms. Spence, called the teams together and dropped the puck. Game on!
The Gr 5 Whitecourt Central Eagles team opened the scoring, but it proved to be a see-saw battle as the Wolverines quickly answered, then took the lead before the Eagles responded with their own tying goal. 2-2. With the Wolverines up 3-2, the Wolverines took a penalty and Connor scored on the resulting penalty shot. 3-3. At the end of the 1st period, it was 4-4.
At intermission, chants of "Whitecourt for Hockeyville" took over as the Wolverines gave away several tickets to upcoming games.
During the 2nd (and final period), the furious action continued. 5-5. 6-6. With 90 seconds of game remaining, Tristan scored to put the Gr 5's up 7-6. In the final seconds, the Wolverines were able to find the tying goal to push the game to a shoot-out.
Through the first 3 rounds of the shoot-out, each team was tied with 1 goal. The Wolverine goal was scored with a mini-stick taken from the crowd. The game continued into sudden death with the goaltenders stopping everything until Captain Ally scored in the 8th round of the shoot-out to win the game for the Whitecourt Central Eagles.
If you would like to see more of the Wolverines and be a part of the Hockeyville entry, all are invited to the Wolverines Skills Competition Friday night, 6:30 pm.
Huge thanks to the Whitecourt Wolverines for joining the school for the game and then signing several autographs afterwards.
Special thanks to the Town of Whitecourt for giving the rink a fresh flood before the game.
